Why a car key needs more than cutting

Most cars built since the late 1990s have a transponder key: a small chip in the head of the key that the car reads before it lets the engine run. A blade cut perfectly to fit will still turn the ignition and do nothing else if the chip is not programmed to that car.

So a car key job has two parts. The blade (or the emergency key inside a smart fob) is cut to the lock, and the chip or fob is programmed to the car’s computer. For push-button cars there is no blade to turn, but the fob still has to be paired before the car will start.

Can I get a new car key with my VIN?

Often, yes. For many vehicles the VIN lets a locksmith or dealer look up the key code, which is used to cut a new key without the original. You will need to prove the car is yours: the title or registration plus a photo ID with the same name.

Find the VIN on the dashboard, through the bottom of the windshield on the driver’s side, or on the sticker inside the driver’s door frame. It is also on your registration and insurance card.

Copying a key costs less than replacing the last one

When you still have one working key, a copy is cut from it and the new chip is added to the car. When every key is lost, the key has to be made from the code or the lock and then programmed with nothing to copy from, which takes longer. If you are down to one key, a spare made now is the cheaper way to avoid an all-keys-lost call later.

Questions about car key replacement and key fob programming

Can a locksmith program my key fob?

For many cars, yes. Open Locksmith Service programs key fobs, remotes and smart keys at the car, in Weston and 14 more cities nearby. A few models can only be programmed with the maker’s dealer software. Tell us the year, make and model when you call (786) 250-6500.

What is a transponder key?

A car key with a small chip in its head. The car reads the chip before it allows the engine to start, so a transponder key has to be both cut and programmed to the car. Most cars built since the late 1990s use one. Open Locksmith Service cuts and programs transponder keys at the car in Weston and 14 more cities nearby.

What do I do if my car key is broken?

Keep both pieces and don’t force the broken key into the ignition. A locksmith can often cut a new key from the pieces or from the key code, then program its chip to the car. Open Locksmith Service replaces broken car keys at the car in Weston and 14 more cities. Call (786) 250-6500 with the year, make and model.

How much does it cost to replace a car key in Weston?

It depends on the car, the type of key and whether you still have a key to copy. A plain metal key, a chip key and a push-button smart key are three different jobs, and making a key with none to copy takes longer. Open Locksmith Service replaces car keys in Weston and nearby cities. Call (786) 250-6500 with the year, make and model.
