How a master key system works

Each lock is set to its own key, and a master key opens all of them. A store manager’s key opens the front, the office and the stockroom; a cashier’s key opens only the front. In a larger building, a grand master opens everything while each floor or suite has its own master.

When someone leaves, only the locks their key opened need to change, not the whole building.

Keys that can’t be copied down the street

Ordinary keys can be copied at any kiosk. A restricted keyway uses blanks that only an authorized dealer can cut, and only for people on the owner’s list. It is the simplest way to stop extra copies of a master key from appearing.

Panic bars and exit doors

A panic bar (exit device) unlatches the door when someone pushes it, so people can get out fast without a key. Fire code requires them on many commercial exits. Your building owner or the local fire inspector can confirm which doors need one; the locksmith installs and adjusts the hardware so it latches every time.
